3 Day Speed Up Vista Mini-Course

Day 3 - Network Tweak, Increase DNS Cache, "WaitToKill" Parameters

Step 6, Network tweak - Disable network cards auto speed detects, dynamic IP, unused protocols and services

When comes to tuning Vista performance, network can improve overall performance up to 20%! Always check your network settings for optimum performance, not only your computer start faster, connection to other networks and Internet can be improved dramatically.

Disable network cards auto speed detects

Not every network card can be configure, but most of driver should have some settings to fixed the card speed.

1. Press Windows key, select Control Panel.

2.Select System and Maintenance.

3. Select Device Manger.
4. Select Network adapters, the network card to configure, right click and select properties.
5. Look for Advanced tab(not necessary in Advanced tab, may be in any tab).

6. Select Link Speed / Duplex Mode (For reference only, different driver might have different name).

7. From Auto Negotiation,

8. To any fix speed that your network support, normally will be 100Mbps / Full Duplex, press OK button.

Assign Fixed (Static) IP address with OPENDNS

1. Press Windows key, select control panel.
2. Select System and Maintenance.
3. Select Network and Internet.
4. Select Network and Sharing Center.
5. Select Manage network connections.
6. Select Local Area Connection, right click and

7. Select Properties.

8. Uncheck any unused protocol, such as QoS Packet Scheduler, File and Printer Sharing... (do not disable this if you want to share file from your computer, if you only need to access other files on the network, disable it), Internet Protocol Version 6, Link Layer Topology...

9. Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4), press properties button.

10. Assign any local IP with 192.168.1.xx, where xx is any no between 1 ~ 254. If you are in network environment, call your network administrator and ask him/her to assign you a Fixed IP address.

11. DNS server can be any no from your network, or if you are home user, key in DNS server address from your ISP.

If you live in Canada, U.S or U.K, you can use these IP addresses from OPENDNS, should be faster.

208.67.222.222

208.67.220.220

Click OK button, then OK again. Your Network should be faster than ever!

Step 7, Increase DNS cache size

DNS is a place translate domain name into IP addresses, if you increase the DNS cache size, more domain and IP addresses can be stored on your Windows, so next time when you try to access the same domain, Windows will get the IP addresses locally and less request to the DNS server over Internet, faster access to Internet resources (and local area network too!)

1. Press Windows key, Type "regedit", then enter.
2.Find HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE =>SYSTEM =>CurrentControlSet => Services => Dnscache => Parameters.

3. If the registry entries does not exists (double check, it should be there!),

4. Right click and create new=>DWord value.

Change or create the entries below, in hexadecimal.

CacheHashTableBucketSize = 1
CacheHashTableSize = 180
MaxCacheEntryTtlLimit = ff00
MaxSOACacheEntryTtlLimit = 12d

Exit Registry Editior and restart.

Step 8, Increase maximum number of simultaneous connection in Internet Explorer

Internet Explorer by default only allows 2 simultaneous server connections, you can increase the number and full utilize your bandwidth especially when you have broadband!

1. Press Windows key, Type "regedit", then enter.
2.Find HKEY_CURRENT_USER => Software => Microsoft => Windows => CurrentVersion => Internet Settings.
3. If the registry entries does not exists (double check, it should be there!),

4. Right click and create new=>DWord value.

Change or create the entries below, in decimal.

axConnectionsPer1_0Server = 10
MaxConnectionsPerServer = 10

Exit Registry Editior and restart.

tep 9, Reduce network wait time

Normally, when your Vista boot up, you still see some delay in network connection, because your Vista is preparing the workstation service for you to access or share your files and printers across the network. If you do not need the networking services, disable it for faster boot time.

1. Press Windows key, Type "services.msc", then enter.
2. Highlight any service, then type "workstation", Vista will search and position you to the Workstation service.

3. Select Workstation service and double click,

4. Change Startup Type to Disabled, then Apply, OK Button.

Restart and see if your network still delay your computer after boot into Windows.

Final Step, The "WaittoKill" parameters

There are 2 types of WaittoKill parameters in registry

  1. WaittoKillAppTimeout (Together with HungAppTimeOut)
  2. WaittoKillServiceTimeout

All these parameters will instruct Vista to wait for certain time before killing the application or service. The value is in miliseconds. 1000 milliseconds = 1 seconds.

1. Press Windows key, Type "regedit", then enter.
2. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER => Control Panel => Desktop,

Set HungAppTimeOut
to a value between "5000 ~ 10000" (the default is 20000), remember do not set the value below 5000 or it might not be sufficient time for normal application to shutdown before killing it.

3. Do the same for WaitToKillAppTimeOut.

4. There are 3 sets of registry entries need to set the value between "5000 ~ 10000":

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE => System => CurrentControlSet => Control

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE => System => ControlSet001 => Control

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE => System => ControlSet002 => Control

Congratulation! You have finished all 10 steps settings, try to restart your computer and enjoy the speed!
