Windows Vista comes with a smart power plan that prolong your notebook power lifetime, but if your battery is enough, and you require more performance than lifetime, you should turn it on, especially if you are using a desktop computer.
Another new feature from Vista is the hybrid sleep. Vista combined Sleep mode with Hibernate mode to offer you the ultimate computer shutdown and boot up. You can easily turn off your computer within 5 seconds and resume it within 5 seconds, and you don't have to worry about data loss, because if Vista detects power disconnected, it will switch to hibernate automatically. However, you should always save your work before turning off!

You can also test the hibernate mode: Power down your system, then unplug the power cabel or turn off the power, after 10 seconds, re-plugin the power cabel and Power up your system, you will notice this time take longer to start, but your data and Windows session will resume!
