One of the key elements in optimization is minimize resources usage. The less resources required by start up program, the more resources the operating system and application can use.

Below are a list of potential services that are safe to disable, but depends on your requirement, some service must be leave live. (Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Performance and Maintenance -> Administrative Tools -> Services)

Alerter – Not require for normal environment, re-enable if some application requires it. The service is to provide administrator related warning.

Distributed Link Tracking Client – Not needed unless you are not in a networking environment.

Help and Support – Leave it enable if you need Windows Help system.
Indexing Service – If you need faster file search all the time, else disable it for faster file access.
IPSEC Services – Must be enabled if you are network user.
Messenger – Required only when you use Windows messenger.
Portable Media Serial Number – Only needed if you are using security dongle.
Remote Registry Service – Allow remote configuration of local Windows registry. Not needed most of the time.
Secondary Logon – Not needed most of the time.
SSDP Discovery Service – Enable only if you need auto discovery UPnP devices

Telnet – Telnet services.
Wireless Zero Configuration –if you are not using wireless connection, disable it.
Smart Card – Only if you are using smart card access, normal user doesn’t need it.
Uninterruptible Power Supply – Only if your computer needed to communicate with Uninterruptible Power Supply.

These is all of the services that are safe to disable or remove, before doing any changes, please save a restore point and try each services listed here. You are not limited to the listed services, you may want to disable more, please refer to Microsoft Windows website for more information…

Another powerful build in start up configuration utility is “msconfig”. (Start -> Run -> type “msconfig”).

Select “/NOGUIBOOT” and click Apply. This will disable the start up logo; result in 1 ~3 seconds faster!
