Turn Off User Account Control

Although UAC is design for better security, for advance user you really hate being ask to confirm every time you do some changes to your system! To turn off UAC,

Go to Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> User Accounts -> Turn User account control on or off, uncheck “use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer.

Use ReadyBoost
ReadyBoost is a new feature introduce in Windows Vista to speed up low speed pagefile technology. This will greatly help your access speed if you are using memory hungry application or your computer is low on memory (less then 1GB).
You need USB memory stick with at least 64 MB, support USB 2.0, reading speed of 3.5 MB/s and writing speed of 2.5 MB/s.
First plug in USB memory stick, go to computer and right click removable storage device, select properties, you will see a TAB call ReadyBoost.
Select “Use this device” and select the amount of space on you want to dedicate for ReadyBoost, click OK.
Turn off Aero glass effect
Aero glass effect is very cool! However it does consume a lot of resources and real time rendering. Not until you have a very high end video card, you should always disable it for faster performance.
Desktop -> Personalize -> Windows Color and Appearance. -> uncheck “Enable Transparency”.
Turn off un-used Services (For reference only, create restore point before trying!)
Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Switch to classic view -> Administrative Tools -> Services
Apple Mobile Device – Turn off if you don’t have any other Apple device beside iPod.
Certificate Propagation – Turn off if you don’t need smart card or smart card certificate.
Computer Browser – Turn off if you are stand alone PC.
Desktop Window Manager Session Manager – Turn off if you do not need Aero glass effect at all.
IP Helper - Provides automatic IPv6 connectivity over an IPv4 network. If this service is stopped, the machine will only have IPv6 connectivity if it is connected to a native IPv6 network. Turn off if you don’t use IPv6.
iPod Service – Turn off if you don’t have iPod.
Offline Files – Turn off if you are stand alone PC or you don’t need offline file access in network.
ReadyBoost – Turn off if you have enough RAM and not using ReadyBoost.
Tablet PC Input Service - Enables Tablet PC pen and ink functionality.

Telephony - Provides Telephony API (TAPI) support for programs that control telephony devices on the local computer and, through the LAN, on servers that are also running the service.
Terminal Services – Turn off unless you need remote access or allow remote access to your computer. A better alternative is TightVNC.
Terminal Services Configuration – Turn off unless you use terminal service.
Terminal Services UserMode Port Redirector – Turn off unless you use terminal service.
Themes – Turn off if you don’t need theme management.
UPnP Device Host – Turn off if you don’t need UPnP auto detects.
Windows Defender – Turn off if you are using 3rd party Anti Spyware. (Recommended on unless you are advance user)
Windows Error Reporting Service – Turn off until you need to diagnose your O.S.
Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) – Turn off if you don’t need image acquisition services for scanners and cameras.

Turn off Remote Differential Compression

Remote Differential Compression will constantly checking for file changes, you don’t need this “fancy” feature unless you don’t mind giving away some network and computer resources.
Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Switch to Classic View -> Program Features ->Choose “Turn Windows features on and off”.
Scroll down and uncheck Remote Differential Compression

You can also turn off some unused Windows features. (Turn off only if you don’t use them!)

Turn off Automatic Disk Defragmentation

Auto disk defragmentation can be very handy, (at least normal user won’t have disk fragmented problem) but for advance user we always do the defragmentation every 2 weeks or more manually to free up memory and disk defragmentation delay.
Computer -> Right Click C: Drive -> Properties -> Tools Tab -> Defragment Now ->Uncheck “Run on a schedule”.
